The yacht carries your party and no one else; the timing follows the light; and one bilingual point of contact composes the day from inquiry to departure.
On land, a proposal shares its stage. Beaches in Mexico are public, and I say so plainly — letters in the sand may gather onlookers, and for some couples the applause is part of it. The deck is the part I can promise: at anchor, the cove, the light, and the partner crew reading your moment belong entirely to the two of you. I am Oksana, founder of Boat and Bay, a boutique private yacht experience agency in Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Nayarit, Mexico — and this exact afternoon is the one I most enjoy composing.
Where the day can go is a separate decision; for a proposal, the light and the vessel come first.
THE MECHANICS
How does a surprise proposal on a yacht stay a surprise?
A surprise proposal stays a surprise because nothing on deck announces it. You board what looks like an ordinary afternoon charter. The cue is a word agreed in advance; the song, the candles and the bouquet follow it; and the ring waits in crew custody until thirty seconds before it matters.
The cue is yours.
Plan it to the minute, or decide nothing at all and take the moment when it feels right — the partner crew reads the day and adjusts. Fixed or entirely in the flow, your partner watches you the whole time and sees nothing coming.
The ring never rides in a pocket.
Not while swimming, not leaning over the rail. From boarding until your cue, the ring sits in crew custody — dry, insured, handed over thirty seconds before it matters. This is a rule, and it has never once been regretted.
The ask happens at anchor.
Under way there is wind, and wind has opinions about hair and about words. Every proposal I compose lands at anchor, in the lee — where the ring box opens without drama and your words are actually heard.
THE DECISION THAT SHAPES THE MOMENT
The hull decides the kneel.
The single most overlooked decision in a yacht proposal is the vessel itself. A small monohull moves, and in the evening it moves more — when you go down on one knee, both of you need to stand firm. For evening proposals I favour catamarans and wider-beamed vessels: the deck holds still, the kneel holds steady, and the film does not sway. That pairing is my part, and I get it right before you pay for it.

Two hulls rest on the water the way a table stands on four legs rather than one — at anchor, the steadiest platform in the bay. A private chef sails with them, so the first dinner engaged is plated at anchor as the light goes.

THE PART MOST PROPOSALS FORGET
Dinner after the yes.
Dinner after the yes is the part most proposals forget. It bridges the minutes between the question and the rest of the evening — and it means the celebration begins where it happened, at anchor, by candlelight, not at a shore restaurant where nobody witnessed your engagement.
While the two of you take in the moment, the deck is quietly dressed — wind-safe candlelight through the lounge, the toast poured, your song still playing. Then the first course lands. Your first dinner as an engaged couple, which I find is the better story at every anniversary.
On 1LOS and 1P the chef is already aboard. On 1L7 and 139, a partner chef joins as an addition — a menu agreed in advance, plated at anchor.

The composition is identical. The pronouns change; nothing else does.
I have composed proposals for two grooms and for two brides on this water. Puerto Vallarta is one of the most established LGBTQ+ destinations in the Americas, and a private vessel is the most at-ease setting there is. Every scenario composes the same way — and I change the pronouns gladly.

Before you plan the ask
What if the water is rough on the day?
Banderas Bay is deep and sheltered — this is not open ocean. Small single hulls feel everything; that is simply their geometry, which is why I favour catamarans and wider-beamed vessels for evening proposals. The captain anchors in the lee of the cove and positions the bow into whatever movement there is, so the deck stays quiet. From late November into spring, the dry season settles the bay into its calmest stretch of the year. The sea is the sea, and no one can control it — but the vessel, the season, the cove and the captain are all chosen deliberately, and that part is in our hands.
Can we go ashore and propose on a beach?
Yes — by tender, in daylight, at the captain's discretion. Two honest details. Beaches in Mexico are public: I choose quiet coves and quiet hours, and they are often near-empty, but strangers can never be promised — the deck can. And once letters are placed in the sand, they cannot be moved that same evening, so the captain and I confirm the exact cove the day before, against the forecast and the tide. If a landing is not possible on the day, the proposal moves to the deck with the same choreography, losing nothing essential.
How do you keep it a surprise?
Nothing on deck hints at what is coming. You board as if this were an ordinary private afternoon on the water. Some plan the cue to the minute; others simply take the moment when it feels right — the partner crew reads it and adjusts either way. Performers, when there are any, board positioned as crew. Your partner sees nothing.
What is included at 1,700 USD?
The private vessel for two for four hours, the proposal setting — a fresh bouquet, wind-safe candlelight, a chilled sparkling-wine toast — snacks and drinks aboard, my coordination from inquiry to departure, and all taxes and marina fees. A private chef, musicians, photography, fireworks and beach letters are the additions, each itemised before you confirm. The vessel, the hours and the moment move the number — never a surprise after.
What if the weather turns?
If the port authority closes the bay or the captain deems conditions unsafe, you reschedule at no cost or receive a full refund, less processing fees. Safe but cloudy is not grounds, and I say so in advance. The complete written terms are at Terms & Conditions.
Can the moment be photographed without my partner suspecting?
Yes. A photographer can board positioned as crew, or the charter is framed as including a couples photo session — which quietly solves dress, hair and nails without one suspicious word. A drone can also work from the beach while the yacht holds position offshore; your partner will never see the pilot. The guide walks through each option and its honest trade-off.
